Live More Intentionally As A Busy Mum
Let’s be honest—motherhood is beautiful, messy, all-consuming, and (let’s not forget) busy. Between school drop-offs, running a household, managing work, relationships, and everything in between… life can start to feel like one big blur. That was me not too long ago. Constantly rushing, reacting, and running on autopilot.
It wasn’t until I hit pause and asked myself, “Is this the life I want to be living?” that everything changed. I realised I wasn’t living with intention - I was living around my to-do list. So I made a shift. Slowly, gently, I began to live more intentionally as a mum. And no, that didn’t mean perfect routines, colour-coded planners, or meditating for an hour at dawn (although I do try to squeeze in a quick 5 mins when I can). It meant making choices that aligned with what actually mattered to me, to my family, and to the kind of life I wanted to build.
If you’re craving more presence, more calm, and more purpose in your motherhood journey, here’s what intentional living really means as well as a few simple ways to start today.
What is intentional living, anyway?
Intentional living is about consciously choosing how you spend your time, energy, and attention, rather than letting life happen to you. It’s tuning out the noise and getting clear on what truly matters to you, then making decisions that align with those values.
It’s not about doing more. It’s about doing less—on purpose.
It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being present.
And most of all, it’s about creating space for what fills you up, not just what fills your calendar.
5 Beginner-Friendly Ways to Live More Intentionally (Starting Today)
1. Start with your values
If you’re not clear on your values, it’s easy to get swept up in everyone else’s version of success or motherhood. Take a few moments to ask: What’s most important to me right now? Maybe it’s connection, calm, or growth. Let those values guide your decisions. Getting clear on my values was a game-changer for me.
2. Simplify your routines
Look at your day-to-day life. What’s feeling unnecessarily complicated or draining? Start small! Maybe it’s creating a weekly meal plan, setting out clothes the night before, or creating a simple morning rhythm for your kids. Small shifts can create big breathing space. For me, it was creating small habits to get me moving each morning, creating a capsule wardrobe to eliminate decision-fatigue and finding easy recipes that are yummy but quick to prepare.
3. Say “no” more often (without guilt)
You don’t have to say yes to every invite, every school committee, or every last-minute request. When you say no to what doesn’t serve you, you make room to say yes to what does. Everyone in your family will benefit from this - trust me!
4. Pause before reacting
Instead of jumping into autopilot, try to build in a 10-second pause before saying yes, replying to a message, or even getting frustrated. That tiny pause is where intentional decisions live.
5. Check in weekly
Set aside 10 minutes at the end of each week to ask: What felt aligned this week? What didn’t? What can I shift next week? This regular check-in keeps you grounded and focused on what matters most.
You don’t have to overhaul your whole life to start living with intention. It begins with one small step—a deep breath, a value-based decision, a little space to pause and choose.
